Rupert Egerton-Smith Artist in residence
Rupert did not go to music college and for almost 15 years barely played the piano as he worked in the commercial world. Success in major competitions including 1st prize in the Bradshaw and Buono competition proved a turning point, and led him to throw himself into his music with abandon.
His performing career since has been extensive and has included solo performances in Carnegie Hall, Paris’ Salle Gaveau, and London’s Cadogan Hall. Over 1500 people attended his recital of the Bach-Busoni Chaconne and Chopin’s B minor sonata at the Berlin Philharmonie. France 2 broadcast his live performances of Scarlatti and Balakirev’s Islamey.
Of his debut recording, the UK Daily Telegraph wrote, “the sheer technical accomplishment in Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit is stunning and the real strength of the disc.” Over the past decade he has studied with the pianist Philip Fowke, Professor Emeritus of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
Rupert has composed music for BBC and Channel 4 documentaries and short films. He collaborates with music agencies internationally and is fascinated by intriguing sound combinations, and the pairing of organic instruments with modern sound design.
Rupert is delighted to have been appointed Artist in Residence at the Orchestra of St John’s. More details on Rupert are on the website www.rupertesmusic.com
